If your pet dies at home and you live in the Tucson area, contact Cholla Afterlife at 520-349-9154. We are available to help you 24/7 every day of the year. Do not panic. It may feel like it is an emergency, but it is not. So take a deep breath, hug your pet, and give us a call. We will explain how to handle these first moments with care and discuss with you the next steps for your companion.
Arizona heat makes immediate temperature control necessary following your pet's passing. Get your pet into a cool room inside your home right away. Do not leave them outside in the heat, in your garage, or in any warm location. Do not put them in a plastic bag or tarp, and do not wrap them up tightly in anything. Just keep them safe, cool, and indoors. Here at Cholla Afterlife we charge additional fees if your pet is not kept cool from the time they pass away until the time they are in our care (just ask and we will explain why).
To keep them as cool as possible, place your pet on a cool surface or a concrete floor to help lower their body temperature. Consider placing a small pillow under their head to keep their neck aligned naturally. Use a waterproof pad, disposable potty pad, or plastic liner underneath your pet or their bedding, most importantly at their front and back ends to catch any natural fluids that release after death. Position your pet in a curled, sleeping pose before their limbs become stiff. Rigor mortis typically begins within a few hours, but may happen within minutes in some cases so adjusting their posture early makes later transport much easier. Close their eyes gently if you feel comfortable doing that, but don't be frustrated or scared if they won't close. Sometimes they just naturally stay open and that's okay. These small caring actions often provide a sense of peace.
If your pet is small, it's okay to keep them in their favorite bed. Then cover them in a clean towel or a favorite blanket to keep them comfortable while you make arrangements.
We recommend keeping the room as cool as possible by running the air conditioning and using fans. You can also place a few ice packs around their back and belly, and cover them with their favorite blanket so they will look like they are peacefully sleeping. Make sure that if you use bags of ice instead of reusable ice packs that the bags do not have holes in them - you do not want your pet to get wet during this time. To manage any potential smells, put scented dryer sheets between your pet and their blanket, and light your favorite incense.
Remember, even after your pet passes away, they are still the pet you loved so continue to treat them that way. Sit with them, pet them, talk to them. Let your kids and your other pets say goodbye in whatever way they want to - don't force them to get close, and don't keep them away. Let them do what feels right for them. There is no right or wrong way to do this.

Ask questions! I know this is a difficult time for you, but this is not a time to turn a blind eye and hope for the best. Here are questions to ask fire and water cremation services:
1. If your vet is handling the cremation: Which company will be handling my pet's cremation? (Newsflash: It is unlikely your vet has a cremation oven in the back room). Look up the company and see if you like them before allowing them to take your pet. Many veterinarians in Tucson use aftercare providers outside of Tucson for their clients' deceased pets so your pet goes on an out of town trip, and you don't even know it!
2. Where will you/they be taking my pet for the actual cremation? The actual cremation location may be outside of Tucson. If you don't want your pet leaving town unannounced, ask.
3. Where will you/they be storing my pet before the actual cremation? Some cremation businesses store deceased pets in a temporary holding location here in Tucson before re-loading them onto another vehicle and transporting them again to another location for cremation. How many people are handling your pet?
4. How will you/they store my pet before the actual cremation? Will they be frozen or just cooled? Personally, I don't want my pets frozen, and it's unnecessary unless it's going to be a long time before they are cremated.
5. How will you/they transport my pet from storage to cremation? Will they be in the back of a covered pickup truck, the back of a cargo van, the back of a refrigerated truck? The pets are often stored in cadaver bags, which are glorified contractor trash bags that can be tossed into vehicles.
6. What is your/their tracking system? How do I know I am getting my pet back? How many people will be handling my pet along the way? Knowing how logistics are handled allows you to stop worrying and focus on your family's needs.
7. Am I able to communicate with you/them during the time you/they have my pet? Is there a portal I can log into? Is there a human I can talk to? Clear communication with the aftercare team reduces anxiety during this emotional transition.
8. When can I expect to have my pet's remains back? If they say a couple of days, ask how it will be done so quickly. If they say a couple of weeks, ask why it will take so long and how your pet will be kept safe during that time.
For many people, their pet is the most important thing in the world to them. I know it's hard to think about your pet's death and what happens to them afterward. But is it worth turning a blind eye and hoping, assuming you are getting their remains back? Not for me! That's why I opened Cholla Afterlife. You should expect your pet to be cared for just as particularly in death as you did in life. That is exactly what we offer here. We are transparent about our processes and our pricing, and we care for your pets like they are our own.
Memorializing a pet often involves selecting a vessel that reflects their personality and your shared history. Some owners choose to scatter ashes in a favorite outdoor spot or keep them in a decorative urn on a mantle. You might also consider a memorial garden with drought-tolerant plants that thrive in our local climate. Adding a personalized stone or a small statue creates a permanent space for reflection in your backyard.
Creating a physical tribute helps bridge the gap between the physical presence of your pet and their lasting legacy. You could frame a favorite photo or keep a lock of fur in a special keepsake box. Many people find comfort in writing a letter to their pet or making a donation to a local animal shelter in their name. These acts of kindness turn your grief into a positive impact for other animals in need.
"The bond we share with our animals doesn't end when they leave us. it simply changes form through the memories we keep."
Incorporate local elements like desert stones or copper accents into your memorial display to ground the tribute in your home. We see many families create a dedicated shelf with toys, collars, and artwork that celebrates the life of their companion. Taking the time to build this space provides a healthy outlet for mourning. Your pet's impact on your life deserves a place of honor that feels authentic to your experience.
Find comfort in a tribute that captures the spirit of your companion. Our collection offers beautiful options to keep your pet close to your heart. We help you celebrate the unique bond you share with your pet through quality memorial pieces. Many are locally made, and some incorporate your pet's remains into a truly special piece.
